Anyone seeking a snapshot of multicultural Australia need only visit some of the schools in our major cities. Schools like Lidcombe Public School in Sydney, which teaches students from 37 different language backgrounds. Or Preston Girls' Secondary College in Melbourne where over 90 per cent of students come from non-English speaking backgrounds. Teaching students from such diverse backgrounds presents its own rewards and challenges. Maria Pallotta-Chiarolli, lecturer and doctoral student in social sciences at the University of Technology, Sydney, and a respected writer and researcher on educational issues relating to ethnicity, gender and sexuality, has firm ideas on how schools can better provide for these students
